I didn't appreciate Paul Harvey's conservative worldview, but as a presenter and (to me this was the secret) as a writer -- he was unmatched. Un. Matched.
To this day, I am surprised that no one has successfully emulated his writing style on radio or anywhere else. There are 50 years of transcripts and I'm quite certain that it could be learned. The attention will turn soon enough -- apparently, in this thread, right now -- to who's next. The best fill-in I ever heard for him, the closest in terms of style and presentation, was... by a country mile... Keith Olbermann. But I was hearing KO fill in pre-Countdown, or at least before Countdown took on the role it has today. A ton of stations would drop the show immediately if Keith got the job. It's hard to imagine that they won't try to find someone new. The program is worth an awful lot of money. Whether anyone else would work is far less certain.
