"It's The New York Effing Times, for chrissakes. They wouldn't publish if it
wasn't true," as my first editor and mentor remarked during the Pentagon
Papers escapade in the 70s. Riiight.
I quit taking the NYT seriously when they used "arson fire" in a story in
the late 90s.
Back in the halcyon days of my youth, when I was a city editor at a small
paper ("It all started at a 5,000-circulation daily in Homestead,
Pennsylvania"), we used manual typewriters, copy pencils, and had (gasp!)
proofreaders. It's been 37 years, but I still remember how Adoria Goehringer
saved our collective butts when she called me at the rim and said the obit
she was proofing was bogus, She had seen the guy at the coffee shop across
the street not five minutes earlier, complaining about how his
soon-to-be-ex-wife was engaging in a campaign of cascading psychotic
behavior to punish him for leaving her. She also happened to be the hair
stylist at one of the local funeral parlors, and had strategically answered
the phone when we had called for the day's death notices.
I used to harbor the delusion that by around this time in my life I'd have
bought or started a small suburban weekly, writing pithy observations on the
local political scene, covering sanitary authority meetings, and pointing
out to the stringer/restaurant critic that the proper spelling was "Reuben,"
not "Rueben."
I also used to think I'd have a personal jet pack by now.
"The future ain't what it used to be."
-Unattributed
(A sanitary authority meeting gave me the best quote I couldn't use in a
story. When I asked the engineer to explain, in layman's terms, the
objections raised by a neighboring authority about building a treatment
plant that would connect to their facility, he said, "They claim our
effluent does not meet their osphretic standards. Or, more succinctly, they
think their shit doesn't stink.")
