There's also the backdoor sneak. The local
commuter rail out of Philly, namely SEPTA,
will get you as far as Trenton, NJ.
At that station you can transfer to a NJ Transit
train, which will get you all the way to
Penn Station, NYC.
It's cheaper than Amtra[c]k, but takes forever...
Hence that episode of Cold Case, where our
Philly detectives were tracking a lead over in NYC.
They took the SEPTA/NJT trip north, leading to
Scotty saying that they were going to take
the Acella ("high speed" Amtrak) going back.
