Fran Drescher Gets Talk Show On FOX O&Os By Kevin Downey TVNewsCheck, October 11, 2010 12:12 PM EDT
Fox Television Stations and Debmar-Mercury will co-produce a preview of The Fran Drescher Show. Starting Friday, Nov. 26, the daily weekday program will be available on the Fox O&Os in New York (WNYW), Los Angeles (KTTV), Philadelphia (WTXF), Phoenix (KSAZ), Minneapolis (KMSP) and Orlando (WOFL). The Fran Drescher Show will be a daily, one-hour entertainment talk show starring the actress, comedian, screenwriter, television director, producer and author. Broadcast live from Los Angeles, the program will feature Drescher's commentary on "captivating topics, current events, pop culture and interviews," according to FTS. Drescher starred in the 1990's CBS sitcom The Nanny, which earned Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominations. After a six-year run, the series became a success in off-network syndication. A rape and cancer survivor, Drescher went on to become a leading proponent of cancer prevention, rehabilitation and medical research following her diagnosis in 2000. Ira Bernstein, co-president of Debmar-Mercury, said today: "With a talent who hasn't done a talk show, we test it. We believe in testing as a method to find out if you have a great talk show host or a great guest. We think she will be a great talk show host, which is why we're investing money in this and Fox is investing money. "We don't want to miss the fall 2011 season. If you wait to test it in the summer, you're really looking at 2012. "We're working on the format right now. I think it will be a combination of guests and issues. There will be celebrities on it, but it will probably be more topic driven than guest driven, since Fran has been through so much and come out the other side with humor. She has empathy for the most difficult things women can go through. "We think the female daytime audience will embrace this woman who had everything - she was rich, famous, a sitcom star and producer - and yet she has survived the most horrible things you can survive. Not only did she survive, she came out the side with a sense of humor. "There won't be political issues in the sense of Republican versus Democrat. But she will tackle issues like health care. She may have a famous actress on, who isn't promoting a movie, but they're promoting a cause they're passionate about. "We're not prepared to discuss the exact scheduling, but it's a daytime show that will air anywhere from 10 or 11 in the morning to 2 or 3 in the afternoon. We're not looking to test at 4 o'clock, to start. And there may be a couple of markets where The Wendy Williams Show is the lead in, but that has not been finalized." Serving as executive producer of the talk show, Drescher will work alongside talk, game and reality show producer Scott Sternberg and producing partner, Peter Marc Jacobson. Lonnie Burstein, executive vice president of programming and production for Debmar-Mercury, spearheaded the development of the project and will oversee it on behalf of Debmar-Mercury. Scott Sternberg Productions will produce the preview episodes. Regards, KGB ----- Kevin G.
