ABC News Disinvites Breitbart From Coverage

By BRIAN STELTER
ABC News said Tuesday afternoon that it had rescinded its invitation to the
conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart from the town hall event he was
supposed to attend.

Mr. Breitbart was to be a participant at an election night event in Phoenix.
The event will be streamed live on ABCNews.com from the Arizona State
University campus on Tuesday evening.

In a letter to Mr. Breitbart on Tuesday afternoon, the executive producer
for ABC News Digital, Andrew Morse, said "we feel it best for you not to
participate."

There was an outcry on social networking Web sites after Mr. Breitbart's
role was reported last week. Mr. Breitbart, who runs a series of right-wing
Web sites, is highly controversial, as critics say he spreads lies and
distortions about liberals. His fingerprints were on the Acorn video tapes
last year and on the video clip of Shirley Sherrod last summer.

ABC initially played down Mr. Breitbart's role, saying that he would be
appearing only online and that he was not being paid. But that prompted Mr.
Breitbart to publish ABC's original invitation and state "with absolute
certainty that the verbal pitch to me to participate was punctuated by the
opportunity to appear as part of ABC News' broadcast television for the
night."

Mr. Morse said in the e-mail message that "we have spent the past several
days trying to make clear to you your limited role as a participant in our
digital town hall to be streamed on ABCNews.com and Facebook." Mr. Morse
cited Sunday's rebuttal as an example of miscommunication between the two
camps.

"As we are still unable to agree on your role, we feel it best for you not
to participate," Mr. Morse wrote.

Mr. Breitbart had already arrived in Phoenix for the town hall. He did not
immediately respond to a request for comment.
