The Canadian Giant Tiger stores are connected with the former chain here in Ohio only by name.
As the story goes, the man who started Giant Tiger in Ottawa embraced the concept of discount department stores as a traveling salesman selling to stores like Uncle Bill's, another now-long-gone discount chain here in Northeast Ohio. He was going to call his venture in Canada a name that was trademarked by some other company, remembered Giant Tiger in Cleveland, and took that name in Canada. Of course, the Canadian GT has outlasted its U.S. inspiration by decades. Giant Tiger here was gone before the mid-1970s. ObWNN: Canada, of course.
