Dear Sumerian. Thank you for your reply. Thank you very much indeed.
Really good to know that, at least you already have one way to go and anything else will be for improvement, nothing more. I did not recommend Shenzhen to anyone, or Guangdong province, right now. It is hard times for them. I rather expect that neighbour provinces, Guangxi, Sichuan and in particular Yunnan to grow fast. But Yunnan is very poor, maybe not the right place for a foreigner. Sichuan province, and in particular Chengdu, sounds better to me. Chongqing, the main city in Sichuan, is very developed as well but I do not expect to grow as fast as in Chengdu. Chengdu, and areas at its West, suffered the earthquake a lot. Central and local governments are investing a lot of funds for reconstruction over there. It means lot of opportunities in that area. You can visit this forum, it is in English. http://bbs.spicycity.cn/index.php Its founder is a friend who now lives and study in Singapore, but he is from Chengdu and, although he is young, he has lot of connections over there. Count on any help that we can offfer. Also in Singapore, of course, however I do not know how much he could do. In case you find yourself really interested I would talk to him to do his best. It has a classifieds section and it works as a gang more or less. Also, I could count on other people in Chengdu who would help. I must agree on something. Although most foreigners do not say but good things about China, language is a problem as you told. Unfortunately, they all feel a little bit isolated, not integrated. Signs and so on are in English too, it grants survival in any city. But daily life is conducted in local language and Mandarin, not in English. Few Chinese people master English good enough to create robust friendship in that language. So, yes, you must speak Chinese to be fully integrated. That is why I suggested Malaysia too. I do not know people over there and I could not reach people except maybe in Malaysia National university that works closely with Peking university. But I do not know if that would be useful for your skills (that I ignore) and how much they would pay attention to me. That is why I did not promise anything before. And finally. My dreamed cities are my hometown, Xingtai, in Hebei province, and Beijing. I really love both of them. It is touching to see them grow year after year and to see how life of people improves everytime I go. I do not live in my hometown since 8 years ago, that makes easy to be impressed every year when I go :) Beijing, for me, is becoming a dream. It is becoming the sort of city that I would design. When I dream on something, few months or few years later authorities announce that my wish will become true. Somehow it is magic. Most Beijingers have a similar feeling. However, it has to change a lot of things yet. Step by step. Chengdu is special. In China some people say more or less "when I visited Shanghai I realised how poor my village is, when I visited Beijing I realised how powerless my village officials are, when I visited Chengdu I realised how young I got married" LOL Seriously. In Chengdu, people and life are special. Much more human than anywhere else where I have been. Maybe that is why many says that Chengdu is the best place to live. Although I still love Beijing :). A promo vid recorded before the earthquake. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9oi-ORbHu0 A Bird's Eye View of the New Chengdu 2008 (recorded after the earthquake) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTqppGxxRok And as many other vids as you might want ! LOL Please, tell me if I could of any help. Thank you very much for your messages, Sumerian. Peace and best wishes.
