"Ancient Iraqi nomenclatures new victims of U.S. invaders

By Kadhim al-Hamami

Azzaman, May 31, 2009

U.S. invaders of Iraq do not seem to be satisfied with the great calamities
they have directly or
indirectly caused the living in Iraq. It now appears they have extended their
unjustified violence
and marauding practices to the country’s ancient heritage.

The new victims are centuries old appellations which Iraqis have commonly
employed in referring to
ancient Mesopotamian sites. One case in point is Tall al-Laham, which nearly
5,000 years ago was the
location of an ancient Sumerian city, some 30 kilometers south of the fabled Ur
of the Chaldees.

Tall al-Laham is a name and a site to which Iraqis are greatly attached. It is
also the scene and
title of one of Iraq’s most popular novels by Najem Wali.

Wali once said: “I do not think there is a place like Tall al-Laham in the
whole of Iraq.” And that
is indeed how most Iraqis see this place to which they are perhaps more
emotionally attached than
any other tract of their Mesopotamian past.

The nomenclature is so sentimental that no authority in Iraq would have ever
thought of filtering
with its name.

But the U.S. invaders, who descended on Iraq with no knowledge of its
traditions, cultures,
religions and history, seem to have the guts to do anything they want with
impunity.

They have distorted one of our most loved names and re-coined it into Tillil.
They have written the
new insulting misnomer on their maps, on the Net and almost everywhere to the
extent that it has
replaced the original lovely name.

What is more shocking is the fact that our authorities have naively adopted the
new misnomer and are
using it in their correspondence with the invaders and other quarters.

After ruing our nation and pillaging our ancient Mesopotamian sites and
artifacts, they want to
change even our skin. As if it was not enough for them to have ruined a nation."
