I would be nice to support SVG format for maps ... Bankiz (www.bankiz.org) 
developed code for this, so it will be very easy thanks to GPL license ;-)

You may also want to take a look into imagemagicks svg rendering 
implementation. As far as I can tell it doesn't depend on any third library.
