OK, this should do for now then. I'm not sure it's perfect in any situation.
The trouble was that clipping occured, reordering the points. vertical
drawing should also be affected. Another potential problem is that shading
depends on beam length, and because of clipping, oblique beams that go
outside of screen must fade too fast.
So, investigation point left: clipping.
IMO not worth keeping this around, so closing the bug.
