libcurl is always needed, it is not optional.
I have tested and it checks if libcurl is installed or not :
checking for gawk... (cached) gawk
checking for curl-config... no
checking whether libcurl is usable... no
checking for png_error in -lpng... yes
BUT configure does not fail if not present!!!
We should fix for the final 0.8 version
