I agree that would help. I use about 5 plugins and i see no slowdown or memory hogging. 64 megs is a lot. Maybe try disabling the biggest (in file size) plugins. Just a suggestion.

an absurd amount of memory to need.

There is nothing in core WordPress that takes that much memory. Please
disable your plugins one by one until you find the cause. With so many
plugins, that will be a long task. Sorry, that's the only way.
