bbPress (trunk) is usually maintained / developed right along with
WordPress (trunk). I think Sam B. (as well as the other lead developers
of WordPress and bbPress) handled a lot of the compatibility between
WordPress and bbPress versions. Especially the trunk versions of each. I
could be wrong though, I haven't kept up with bbPress in a good while.
