Its not very pluggable, and doesnt have that many(if any) hooks/filters in it at present AFAIK.

I'm planning on giving the plugin installer/plugin upgrader/theme upgrader code a bit of modularisation for 2.8, So some filters will probably become available then for that lot, I've not looked at the core update functions much though, So not sure what'd be required there, But some filters are probably going to be added at some point in the future, but cant say there will be any for 2.7..

Is the automatic update pluggable at this point? If not, would that be an
option for 2.8? Maybe an option to "Protect" a given folder... I could see
this frustrating a less tech-savvy user who ignored the warnings and
upgraded without backing up their files.

I think there definitely needs to eventually be away to protect certain
files or folders that WP wants to delete, without having to rename them.

Many years ago, WordPress stored its images in /wp-images/ The core upgrade is set to delete *any* old file which has ever been included in WP, so thats
why its deleteing it.

I'm not too sure theres a need to remove *every* ancient folder.. But there
might be some people out there who still have it after upgrading so many
versions

 That does seem strange...

I like to keep my uploads in /wp-images instead of /wp-content/uploads. I
know a few other people who do this as well.

Anyone know if there is any particular reason why
wp-admin/includes/update-core.php has the wp-images folder set as a
folder
to delete automatically after upgrading?
