Running wpkg from the command line (through cscript) with the /debug flag shows the packages from the removed profile trying to be updated/removed. And then the same error is echoed: 'null' is null or not an object... Come to think of it, the package that it was trying to remove did not contain any <remove> actions. Could be related...
