Today is Walt Whitman's birthday.
Why is May 31st not a national holiday?
Some years, it coincides with Memorial Day
But not this year.
Whitman would want us to celebrate,
Not merely memorialize some nearly forgotten dead, anyway.
If our greatest poet can't get a communal day off,
Is it no wonder that the rest of us
Have to work harder
At jobs ill-suited both to our needs and desires.
Leisure is the womb of poetry and we shall have it!
Walt Whitman declares it through these eyes and words.

Every American poet
Should write at least one poem today.
Otherwise, why are you here?
Each painter should fill one canvass,
A cityscape, if possible.
Each musician should compose
At least one song with words
Supplied by a willing and able poet
Still living on or off
What Whitman began.
Is it tyranny to insist, this should?
I don't thinkso.
No one is being compelled to joy.
It arises naturally, outside ego,
If it is true.
