Charlie -- Depending on your platform: NT/Win2000 - Microsoft NetMon network monitor (included with o/s). NT/Win2000/Linux/BSD/etc - Ethereal (freeware - requires libpcap [unix] or winpcap [windows] packet capture driver. Other - Network Associates/Network General Sniffer
These are packet sniffer/decoders and can assist in troubleshooting TCPIP conversations, including FTP. For example if one side of the conversation experiences a delay or times out, you will see that. However, if the problem is hardware/os related, all a packet trace may indicate is that one side dropped out. I would recommend Ethereal as a starter because its a free download and seems to work ok.
