Thanks, Michael. I agree, the MS scheduler is pretty lacking. I only use
it because it's already installed on all my machines. I'll think about
replacing it with a better scheduler, but I don't think that's the problem
in this case. I have plenty of other scheduled perl scripts and batch files
which launch external applications, and this is the only time I've seen this
particular behavior. Usually this comes down to a problem with permissions,
interactivity, or pathing, but I can't find the problem in this case.

BTW, check out the MS Resource Kit for your version of Windows for a utility
called Srvany.exe -- it lets you run any application as a service. It's
perfect for those apps that otherwise make you leave a console logged in.

Thanks, and take care!

Peter

it's been my experience that any MS scheduler bundled with the OS is not
very reliable. I tried doing exactly what you are only to give up in
frustration. I don't think it's a problem with the FTP program or the
script, it's something to do with the scheduler itself.

I now use a third-part app called EZ Scheduler from American Systems
(http://www.americansys.com/). It's free, very easy to use, and totally
reliable. The only problem I find (if you can call it that) is that the
machine must be left with a user logged in, it doesn't appear to run as a
service. If you're willing to leave it logged in and locked then give it a
try.
