It's really hit or miss with the IE clients - some of them work, some of them not. In this one case, the user couldn't even connect to the FTP site, even when actually logging in as anonymous, and I even tried giving them a temporary username/password, but to no avail. I imagine half the time is just some kind of firewall issue, but good luck explaining that to the customer that doesn't know what you are talking about.
I think what I'm going to have to do is develop some sort of web client that customers can get to from the web - that way, they are all using the exact same client, and I can configure it from where I'm at. FTP uses two connections to get its job done, a control connection and a data connection. To the end-user it is transparent, but under the covers, the difference is who initiates the data connection. FTP has two basic types of transfers, active and passive. In active mode the server initiates the data connection and in passive mode the client does. Usually it's the first thing to try when having FTP difficulties.
