Ok, I've got the site up and going, its not complete yet, and it isn't fully compliant, but for now it works and the client's browser's going to see it working. So he'll pay me!<g> I'll go back and fix the other compliance issues later. There are a couple of things that will cause it to fail - the ampersand, and there are some tables in the header and footer that I'd do a totally different way now I know more about this compliance thing. I have to say I was pretty enthusiastic before, but now I've rebuilt my site as compliant as I can do it within the time constraints I have, I'm totally sold. The file sizes are much smaller, and the files are easier to read because all those tables are gone. Since I'm still a babe in the woods when it comes to xhtml and CSS2, I've relied quite a lot on Top Style and Dreamweaver2004 to do a lot of it for me, but I think it comes out pretty good, if I say so myself. I'm convinced this is the way to go - it removes so much of the tinkering and guesswork, and I am dead-set certain that when this client says "I want you to change this and that and the other thing" I'm going to smile, knowing it's going to be a fairly straightforward job. And now the presentation is separated from the logic and processing, so I can reuse this site for other clients, far easier than I could before.
