Try Michael Kear's "Colourschemer" mentioned yesterday for some deeper reds.

colour 1 should be 990000 colour 2 should be 000000
Keep steps at 5 or extend for more gradient like results.
can change color 2 to ffffff for lighter shading (like the background colors on links, etc.)
The 990000 color came from http://www.presentations.com -- they should know about color psychology.
My opinion about alignment --
Left alignment looks much more professional and with-it -- centering went out with the late 90s! Many ways to "fill" the left side if contact info is not enough to give the page balance (color block/gridlines, etc.)
