I think I'll be avoiding this route anyway as I really want the portal page
to be cross-browser compliant.
The subsites will be sporting Firefox logos, and warnings for IE users.
However, I can't really do that on the very front page.
If you have any suggestions about how I could get this to work in a
cross-browser compliant way (at least IE6 + FF1, others I don't really care
about) they'd be greatly appreciated. I have an extremely negligible number
of non IE6 / FF users in my target audience acording to the stats... I'd
almost prefer to lose the user than waste the time.

MSIE (all Windows versions, and possibly Mac too) doesn't support any of 
the "display: table*" properties

If it did... then we could just use display: table-cell for fluid 
columnar layouts
