I strongly, strongly recommend Shopify: http://www.shopify.com/?ref=fathom-digital I have implemented about 5 Shopify projects this year, and every one has been successful for both my agency and my clients. It's a hosted solution, written in RoR with SEO in mind. It's simply the easiest to teach my clients how set up and manage, and the user experience translates to consumer sales. If you must use a self-hosted and managed solution, check out Magento, written in PHP/MySQL and also very user-friendly for both consumer and administrator. The SEO is very solid, too.
