On this end the scroll is only seen on the 7 portfolio pages. All the
portfolio images are 10px left-aligned and approx 160px wide [35%] and
fit within the window. However, I can scroll horizontally in which case
there is white space and the double rule [border]. I have found that it
is solely the image that causes this -- no image -- no horizontal
scrollbar.
I will try Tee's suggestion but modify it so that a smaller set of
portfolio images is used specifically and only for mobile.
Thanks to all for your diligence and persistence in helping me to
resolve this little dilemma.

No, maybe it's me getting confused.
As you have not set any width on the image in the html, I was seeing it as
the image would be constrained to 35% of its parent container, <figure>
which has no styling set and is itself constrained by #main with a
max-width of 40em.
Corrections to my thinking are more than welcome from all.
.... I'll just quietly watch developments.
