Hi Joe,

Have sent some WAV files directly to you showing the JT4 "Asterix" issue.
It does not seem to be connected to level as it shows up when the signal is attenuated to the point of failure.

It only shows if "No Deep Search" is selected.

I found if I renamed the wav files, I could not open them with WSJT - it terminated.
An older WSJT crashed with an error.
Will experiment a bit more.

For the test, I peaked my beam on my GB3CSB beacon, its not quite a clear path, but it will minimise distortion. I then used a variable attenuator on the front end of the Rx (no preamp) to reduce the RF level.
It was just decoding at -53db, and occasionally at -54db

With -55db in it was reliably decoding with three averages.
I might send these later, will see if I can get lower...

Mon_140115_205200_r3636-CSB direct.WAV
Mon_140115_210200_r3636-CSB-40db.WAV
Mon_140115_210800_r3636-CSB-50db.WAV
Mon_140115_213600_r3636-CSB-53db.WAV

Will any of the DS options work with the beacon text "GB3CSB IO75XX" ?

Thanks, David GM6BIG

David --

For example, in the line:
170800 9 -10 0.1 -46 7 * GB3CSB IO75XX 1***** A

The * after the 7 indicates that the message contained the "normal" sync pattern for JT4. (Messages containing a signal report use an inverted sync pattern.)

The ***** near line end is the result of a "quality" estimator being numerically too large to be printed in 5 columns. (You're copying a very strong signal.)

For interest, send me a *.wav file containing a record that decodes with the ***** symbols. I'd like to look ate it.

Hi All,

Should have said this is under WinXP.

   Hi Joe,

Good to see the averaging in JT4 now.

Question though, what is the meaning of the asterix's in the decode window ?
