Ok, I thought that was the technical reason.

I guess it boils down to single clicks in the WF also setting the mode 
automatically.

The vertical space is at a premium on a lower resolution screen when the 
band is busy, I've had a couple of comments about changing the layout to 
fit mode decodes in somehow. The button would become superfluous given  
the statements above and below.

The simplification would be that it would become impossible to transmit 
in a mode on a frequency where a reply could not be decoded.

Not a big deal, but it seemed a natural consequence of the split always 
being there for dual mode. Although I can see a few complications when 
operating right at the division and drifting a bit, then moving the 
divider is necessary but that is already the case.
