Sorry - been away from things for upwards of 7 or 8 months. I tried to catch up by going through the 1500+ messages in the WSJT / development lists - I apologise if any of these items have been posted / asked about and I missed it.
I was previously using WSJT v1.3 r3673 under Windows 7 installed to C:\wsjtx Downloaded wsjtx-1.4.0-rc2-win32.exe and installed it choosing the same directory location. I figured it would pick up my previous settings and maybe cleanly overlay the old version. When I launched v1.4.0-rc2 none of the settings were found. I consulted the installation section of the on-line documentation: http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx-doc/wsjtx-main.html In section 3.1 it mentions where "Logs and other writable files" will be found. It appears that v1.3 (and prior) wsjt-x settings are in the same directory as the program with the file name wsjtx.ini. I copied that file to the AppData\Local\WSJT-X directory ... and needed to rename the file wsjt-x.ini. Still needed to go through the v1.4 settings to get things to work. Here are a few suggestions for the release of v1.4 (all comments reflect installation and usage on Windows 7 based system): ----- Upgrading: Since v1.4 changes file locations ... if the installer doesn't take care of this for you it would be good to have documentation on the best practice for upgrading from previous versions to v1.4 or later versions. Seemed like I also needed to go through the v1.4 settings and make choices again - maybe some additional notes on what needs to be done? (When I noticed the rig settings weren't working I basically when through all settings from scratch.) ----- Installations: Is it the intent to support multiple versions of wsjt-x on a system? If so it would be good to include some information in the documentation on how this works. A normal user's assumption may be that when you install a newer version of a product that the installer will upgrade (or remove) an older version. That is not the case with v1.4-rc2. I installed v1.4 to the same directory (C:\wsjtx) that my previous version was installed to. That may have created a mess. To further that: I also chose the same start menu program groups folder - and this is what I ended up with: wsjtx Uninstall WSJT-X Documentation WSJT-X Web Site WSJT-X wsjtx1.3 (Note: the last shortcut I may have actually renamed to that some time ago when migrating to v1.3) I tried to launch wsjtx1.3 - no errors - but no windows on the screen, either. A user wouldn't know what's going to be uninstalled by that "Uninstall" link noted above. (But based on the properties I'd guess v1.4.) I'd recommend leaving uninstall off the start menu - if someone needs to remove the software on a Windows system let them do it from the Programs and Features control panel. I think it would be nice to be able to have multiple versions of wsjt-x on a system ... and have start menu shortcuts to each of them under a common start menu folder, e.g.: wsjt-x wsjt-x v1.4 WSJT-X Documentation WSJT-X v1.4 wsjt-x v1.5-rc1 WSJT-X Documentation WSJT-X v1.5-rc1 etc. And I'd recommend the defaults for both the directory structure and start menu structure be similar. To wit: Default installation destination folder: currently: C:\WSJT\wsjtx proposed: C:\WSJT\WSJT-X 1.4.0-rc2 Start Menu Folder: currently: wsjtx 1.4.0-rc2 proposed: WSJT\WSJT-X 1.4.0-rc2 BUT: if multiple versions all look to the same user data file area - will that cause a problem? Settings %APPDATA%\..\Local\WSJT-X\WSJT-X.ini ----- Naming: Be consistent with the naming convention ... some places its wsjtx and other places wsjt-x. ----- Windows Installer Name: The v1.4-rc2 name is a bit long. It wouldn't hurt to also include the version in the name (as some people may not have the version column displayed). Here's what I see for v1.4-rc2 and the previous version: WSJT-X - JT9 and JT65 Modes for LF, MF and HF Amateur Radio. wxjtx Version 1.3 r3673 How about something simple like: WSJT-X v1.4-rc2 ----- Bob W1QA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dive into the World of Parallel Programming.
