The advantage of the .c2 file format is that it’s about 1/8 the size of a .wav file. Whereas the .wav files used by wspr represent real-valued samples at 12 kS/s rate, the .c2 file contains complex samples at 375 S/s rate (1/32 of 12 kS/s), corresponding to the complex signal obtained after quadrature-downconverting a slice of the spectrum with bandwidth 375 Hz centered on 1500 Hz.
