Indeed, Centos 7 has gfortran-4.8.5 but I'm running Centos 6 which has
been very reliable and will keep getting updates through November, 2020.
Also most hobby style users
will probably be using Fedora if they are using a RedHat based
distribution of Linux. The RedHat Enterprise Linux and the free CentOS
companion are aimed more at commercial users who value stability more
than closer to bleeding edge features.
I agree with most of what you said though I don't find all that many
Fedora users anymore. The issue here is the lack of an LTS release that
doesn't force them to upgrade or re-install every 18 months. THIS is why
I run Centos but even then, I think the world is very much shifting
towards Debian-based systems now (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, etc). As such,
if I was to "upgrade", it wouldn't be to Centos7.
Anyway, back on topic.. I'd love to get WSJT-X running on Centos6 and
this thread was talking about a potential Gfortran bug. Do you still
think that's the case? Considering that Fortran has been quite stable
for a long time now, I'd be a bit surprised but I'm willing to persue
and maybe rebuild it, apply patches to it, etc. Any thoughts if WSJT-X
might compile with the alternative v0.93 G95 compiler? Maybe the G95
snapshot version instead?
