I know his original post was meant for FT8, but if there are any spare bits available in any of the modes with variable length transmissions (fast JT modes, MSK, etc), then I'd like to see them dedicated to indicate the length of transmission. In other words, if I hear a CQ in any of those modes, WSJT-X can automatically choose the correct duration for the reply. In fact, one side could change durations mis-QSO (up for poor condx, down for good condx) and the other side would pick it up and adapt. Perhaps we could: 1) Settle on discrete values as it is now (5, 10, 15, 30) which would require 2 bits 2) allow for n * 5 second values for greater granularity (would need 3 bits to get 30 secs) 3) perhaps something esoteric like 5 * 2^n seconds (2 bits gives you 5, 10, 20, and 40 secs). 4) use some other mechanism to indicate the duration, like a specific start tone on the packet. -- David Tiller Sr. Architect/Lead Consultant | CapTech (804) 304-0638 | dtil...@captechconsulting.com On Jun 29, 2017, at 11:33 AM, Joe Taylor <j...@princeton.edu> wrote: > Three extra bits are available in the message payload, with uses yet to be > defined. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Check out the vibrant tech community on one of the world's most engaging tech sites, Slashdot.org! http://sdm.link/slashdot _______________________________________________ wsjt-devel mailing list wsjt-devel@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/wsjt-devel
