I know his original post was meant for FT8, but if there are any spare bits 
available in any of the modes with variable length transmissions (fast JT 
modes, MSK, etc), then I'd like to see them dedicated to indicate the length of 
transmission. In other words, if I hear a CQ in any of those modes, WSJT-X can 
automatically choose the correct duration for the reply. In fact, one side 
could change durations mis-QSO (up for poor condx, down for good condx) and the 
other side would pick it up and adapt.

Perhaps we could:
1) Settle on discrete values as it is now (5, 10, 15, 30) which would require 2 
bits
2) allow for n * 5 second values for greater granularity (would need 3 bits to 
get 30 secs)
3) perhaps something esoteric like 5 * 2^n seconds (2 bits gives you 5, 10, 20, 
and 40 secs).
4) use some other mechanism to indicate the duration, like a specific start 
tone on the packet.
