I'm not suggesting that this should be forced on users by WSJT-X, but
there is a way it could be hinted at for those who want to choose
regular steps when calling CQ. And that is to add, subtly and in the
background, a graticule to the waterfall.

we did consider enforcing channelization while designing FT8, there are
sensitivity and decoder speed advantages to be had if signals can be
assumed to be at certain offsets. The raised frequency calibration and
stability requirements were considered to be unlikely to be met by all
stations,
Having a "hint" graticule is not a bad idea though.
Two pass decoding is being investigated as FT8 looks like it will be
popular on busy HF bands. It remains to be seen how users get on with
the rather fast pace of thinking that it imposes, particularly with only
limited support from JTAlert and similar.
