As Bill mentioned in his OP, the FT8 decoder is still a work in progress
but I have noticed that the r7939/r7944 decoder is currently too slow to
be usable on my machine, which uses a Core 2 Duo E6700 CPU (2 x 2.66 GHz
cores), even with nothing much else running. (Admittedly this machine is
getting a bit long in the tooth, but this is the first time it's been a
problem.) The attached .wav takes about 2.5 seconds to decode. This is
not an unusual example.
If the FT8 decoder is already as fast as it can be, then some of us will
need faster machines. Maybe it would be worth having two separate
checkboxes on the Settings->Advanced tab for JT65 and FT8 two-pass decoding.
Hi Richard,
the menu entries "Menu->Decode->Fast/Normal/Deep" are active for FT8 and
do a lot of what you are asking for. OTOH the current Rx frequency is
decoded first so even if the complete decode cycle takes a few seconds
longer it should not impact QOSs. Agreed you might miss a period when
scanning for new QSO partners but that doesn't mean you need to buy a
faster CPU, and I doubt it will help much anyway, just be patient and
work them 30s later.
There is more work being done, fine tuning the decoding depth and
efficiency but don't expect any huge improvement is decoding speed, we
are more interested in decoding weak signals than near instant results.
