What I can’t workout is why people are using EU VHF in the 1st place.

People are using EU VHF if they are in a contest requiring either a serial number and/or the full 6-digit locator. This is required in the major VHF contests in Europe. Many contests on HF also requires a serial number, so this feature applies to more than just EU VHF.

Tom is right: there was NO good reason for anyone to be using "EU VHF Contest" messages in last weekend's FT8 contest.

It should have been obvious that the contest rules were written explicitly for the "ARRL RTTY Roundup" message formats. These allow exchange of signal report and US State or Canadian Province, or signal report and serial number for all others. "EU VHF Contest" messages allow exchange of 6-character locartors, for which there was no need in last weekend's FT8 contest.
