I think you have several choices for future versions: 1) Ignore the fact that people don’t read and just click through the existing splash screen. Downside is the many messages of people who think the software is malfunctioning.
2) During the “lockout” period either replace the splash screen with one explaining why the program will exit (because of the contests), or make a second one with that same explanation that follows the first. You’ll still get those who click and don’t read but it may hopefully be not as many. 3) Just disable the modes you don’t want used with a suitable splash screen, and leave the rest active, so people don’t have to change software? You’ll still get the same problem but again maybe with fewer people.
