I think that it's important to understand the strange relationship
between alsa and pulseaudio. At the side of the interface to the sound
card, pulseaudio is using alsa modules. But when a client want to
connect to the audio system in the ALSA style, it has to use a
compatibility interface of pulseaudio. Nevertheless, the recommanded way
to connect is the native pulseaudio interface.
