Phil, As part of a multi-region IARU Band planning sub-committee we are working on getting agreement to expand the FT8 band to enable at least 2-3 FT8 "3kHz" channels per band. Could your frequency hopping idea be expanded so that the transceiver frequency control could be included enabling traffic to be spread over say 3x3kHz, but still help people maintain their "band awareness" of who is on the band I wonder?
I'd have to think about this, but I tend to doubt it. Each would be a separate band since my scheme assumes a receiver can listen to everything all the time (except when transmitting).
But it would be easy with a modern SDR that can listen to more than 3 kHz. This would only be needed on the receive side, and cheap(er) receive-only SDR front ends are getting pretty common. In my own station I connect several HF receive SDRs through a T/R switch with my HF transceiver so they can all listen whenever I'm not transmitting.
