Hi Saku,
it's not quite that simple. The width of a window is the sum of the
widths demanded by the widgets and layouts contained within it. There is
a regression in 2.5.1 which means the main window width is larger than
it should be, that is fixed for an upcoming bugfix release. One factor
that contributes, and should not, is the length of the longest save Tx 5
macro.
Hi Bill (and all), this is an observation about the revised main window layout
in v2.5.1...
The release notes for v2.5.1 state the changes include: "Improved main window
layout to
ensure TxN messages are fully visible." For my part, and on the various PCs on
which I've
run WSJT-X over the years, I've never, ever experienced an issue with any of
the TxN
messages being too long for or in any other way not fitting into the boxes
containing the
message texts so I was somewhat surprised that this was seen as an issue that
required
attention.
My first reaction when I upgraded from v2.5.0 to v2.5.1 was that the LHS of the
main window
had become extremely cramped and was much less comfortable and convenient to
use, and
that even my longest (13-character) Tx5 message occupied only about 25% of the
available
width of the relevant box. The standard text in the Tx1 - Tx4 and Tx6 boxes
was similarly
confined to the far LH end of the box, with acres of white space to the right
of the text in each
box.
I've now reverted to v2.5.0 in order to regain the significantly better (IMO)
and preferable
usability of the main window.
It's occurred to me that for anyone who had found the size of the message boxes
too small
for their message text, the most obvious solution would have been for them to
reduce the
size of the 'system' font so that the text fitted into the boxes. FWIW, I use
a Dell 2007WFP
20.1" monitor with a resolution of 1680 x 1050; the WSJT-X main window occupies
approximately the bottom left-hand quarter of the display area and my WSJT-X
configuration
uses 9pt MS Shell Dlg 2 as the 'system' font. Even with my ageing,
less-than-perfect
eyesight this font and everything in the main window that uses it is perfectly
legible and all the
TxN messages fit fully and very comfortably within the sizes of the boxes
available within
v2.5.0.
Just my two penny's-worth...:-)

Martin,
there are only two interactive controls in the lower left-hand part of
the WSJT-X main window, the frequency selection drop-down list and
entry, and the `S` indicator that can be clicked to reset the CAT
connection. Neither of those has moved, changed in size, or position. I
don't understand your comments with respect to "usability" of that area
of the main window. All that has happened is that some unused space to
the left of the DX Call and Grid entries has been occupied by moving
those controls and associate labels, along with the time and date
display, slightly to the left.
There are several situations where the TxN message fields can be
insufficiently wide to show the full messages, this is dependent on
message length, which is not 13 characters BTW (some EME messages with
nonstandard calls are quite long), the font sizes selected, the platform
the application is running on, the screen resolution, and others.
There is a known issue with 2.5.1 where attempting to reduce the main
window width to a minimum size, as required by those with low resolution
monitors for example, does not work optimally. This will be repaired in
a bug-fix release coming soon.
The key to the new changes is that the DX Call and Dx Grid along with
the TxN message fields expand and contract, as the window width is
changed, in a way that is more consistent and proportional with the
likely contents of those fields.
