This may be irrelevant, but how you returned from FT4 to FT8 to work the single
station?

The failure reason is solely due to the orphaned jt9 (jt8.exe) process that is
the main engine for decoding within wsjt-x, I think. You could have also kill
the process (jt8.exe) using Windows Task Manager. Normally that is enough and
no need to reboot the total system.
