Aye Captain Joseph & Crew, Once upon a time I and others used the ionosphere with HF for comms with B-52s. The rx site was at Westover afb and the tx site was in Granby with multi KW ssb going out on log periodics. There were at least 6 such stations in the Alpha Bravo net.. now called giant talk.
First time I heard aurora, someone brought their 6m ssb rig to the rx site during aurora and the in spite of the spectral spread the ssb was readable. Later i was at the elephant cage in Karamursel until the Turks bombed Cypress so i ended up in NATO and went to Synop. All this time we had rtty links with solar observatories.
