While this always seems to be a good idea on the surface, it really ties the hands of the software's flexibility and portability.  For example, I have run into Appimage issues with GQRX on various platforms.   Usually various library versions out of sync with the Appimage.   To the point where it's easier to just build GQRX from source and it just works.    The same holds true for WSJT-X.   A end user such as myself operating at Enterprise Linux level (paid for) vs. someone with a rolling release that gets built daily.   My Appimage will run for 10 years, but the person on a rolling release may run fine today, but break after tomorrows update.  With the fix being a simple recompile.    It seems like the vast majority of the WSJT Linux user base is on a rolling release.   When a person is using a rolling release, rebuilding various packages is considered a normal daily task.

For me personally, an appimage would offer a nice alternative.   I could see myself giving up the various compile optimizations (higher speed/better memory usage) in favor of a simple copy/past, chmod 755, and go...

Hi all,

I recently wrote about building and running WSJT-X in a Docker container ( https://sm6vfz.wordpress.com/2023/07/10/building-and-running-wsjt-x-in-a-docker-container/ ). This works great for me and I no longer plan to run any of the built binaries.

But another option I have become aware of, would be to build the program as an AppImage ( https://appimage.org/ ).
Is there any experience here with that concept?
If it is living up to its promises it seems to be a nice way of distributing a program like WSJT-X in a format that runs on most linux/unix distros, instead of building packages for each and everyone of these.
