I saw some news items a few days ago.  This is from Google AI:The September
2026 Windows 11 security update (KB5124008) is causing widespread audio
failures, specifically affecting USB Audio Class 1.0 devices with a "Code 10"
startup error. [1]I am not a Windows person but this seems to coincide with the
issue.73,MarcWA6HBR Current Outage Details
 * The Cause: The September 8 security patch breaks legacy USB audio
peripherals (headsets, speakers, and mics) that rely on USB Audio Class 1.0.
[1, 2]
 * Symptoms: Zero audio output, volume controls stuck at zero, unresponsive
sound settings, and Device Manager showing "This device cannot be started (Code
10)". [1]
 * The Fix Status: Microsoft's emergency out-of-band updates have only
partially resolved the issue, and a comprehensive cumulative fix is expected
during October's Patch Tuesday. [1, 2] Temporary Workarounds
 * Switch Audio Modes: If your USB device supports switching from
multi-channel/3D audio down to a standard 2-channel stereo configuration, it
may temporarily restore sound. [1, 2]
 * Use Non-USB Audio: Route your sound through a regular 3.5mm audio jack or a
direct wireless Bluetooth connection instead of the affected USB port. [1]
 * Reinstall Drivers: Open Microsoft Device Manager, right-click your
problematic USB audio device, select Uninstall device, and restart your PC to
force Windows to re-enumerate the hardware. [1, 2]

to make a guess on this.  Wonder if wfview is running ok, is it controlling the
rig?  Does WSJT-X run ok alone with the rig?  Having had similar things to this
happen here, my guess would be that somehow the WSJT-X audio settings have
changed and need to be reset.  If you're having trouble with rig control,
perhaps the usb port assignment to the rig has changed.  That happens here
sometimes with my linux system. Hope you find the help you need and get things
in order. 73,Andy, ka2uqw   On Tuesday, September 22, 2026 at 02:38:47 PM EDT,

My FT-8 system uses wsjt-x and wfview running on a Windows PC. Installation was
easy and it worked great.   Then I went on vacation and now a week later,
nothing works.
A friend suggested that maybe a recent update from Microsoft in the PC's OS
might be causing the trouble, since nothing else changed.  But what could it
be?  Any ideas?
