As Brett says, that money is used to cover hosting costs, and to occasionally pay the airfare for team members who otherwise wouldn't be able to make a full meetup of the team. The xserve we use as our build server[1] was also paid for from the ad income. We also recently discussed making a charitable donation with some of the ad revenue.
