Hello world,
EYUC in Frankfurt has started, 1 day after finals in Copenhagen. Lots of coaches travelled here directly from there.
900 junior players are here, competing in U17 and U20 women and open divisions.
Monday had a very cheerful opening ceremony in beautiful sun shine, in which all 17 nations marched onto the center court to their national anthems, to be followed by the opening match of U17 open IRL vs GER, in which GER did dominate.
Tuesday then all teams had their first 2 matches. And it was an amazingly hot match day already.
U17 open
AUT upset ITA but lost to BEL. GBR, FRA and GER won their matches easily. NED beat SWE, BEL, the newcomer team, also got their first victory on this day.
U17 girls
The champion NED beat GBR and AUT. AUT did beat SWE, who came as newcomers, GER, only 4th in 2014, also got 2 victories against FRA and SWE. FRA, 2nd in 2014, beat GBR 11:8.
U20 women
RUS has only this one team, as the country in the current political and economical struggle was only able to finance 1 team to come, and chose the women to represent them. It worked out wel; RUS beat both GBR and NED. ITA also won 2, vs SUI and IRL. FRA also got 2 wins, against FRA and (for the 1st time ever) against GER, 10:8. SVK had extreme results, losing FRA 0:17 then beating ISR 16:3.
U20 open
4 pools of 4. They all started out with seed 1vs3 and 2vs4, no big upsets here except pool D where BEL beat ISR 13:12 and to seed AUT struggled to beat NED only 14:12.
The second round had seed 1vs2 and 3vs4. We had super hot matches at a level that we had never before seen on day 1. FIN beat their neighbors SWE 17:16, and again pool D was super hot: BEL beat their neighbors NED 15:13, and ISR after loosing to BEL beat top seed AUT 15:13.
The most amazing was GBR vs ITA; GBR after many years finally seemed to control ITA, but gave away several match points and lost 14:13 in universe.
But as all these are 1st round matches, it really only proves that more than half of the 16 teams are able to play highest level ultimate; some of those teams may meet again at a later stage and the score may as well go the other way. Tomorrow has the seed 2vs3 matches, which will decide between power and lower pools. But there are recovery crossovers before play offs, so the up vs down question will remain unclear until thursday.
Wheather will be super hot over the next days; the cool rain we got today will be remembered as real bliss later on. The entire tournament on the 12 fields is running extremely smoothly. There is enough staff, catering is awesome, happy faces all around. The TD Robert and also staff manager Heiko, both of the classic Feldrenner team, have everything under perfect control so the job for us EUF youth organizers is pleasantly simple. We focussed a lot on a good set up in the past months, and it is paying off.
Tonight also had a 2h very constrctive meeting on how to design the future of youth ultimate 2016-20.
Find all results in eyuc2015.eu. Results are visible as they come in, live scoring should also work from thursday. The live stream is friday and saturday, 9 matches total. If you live anywhere near by, I strongly avise you to come check it out in person.
1000 thanks to Robert, Heiko and another 50+ people working their asses off,
Chris
EUF youth committee chair
