The installation will pause at that point so that xorg-libXt can be installed with the explicit variant. All -N does is skip the prompt. But there seem to be consequences of skipping the prompt. Without the prompt it continued installing the ports instead of giving me the chance to select the correct variant. Is that possible? When I upgraded my laptop to Sierra, without using -N: % sudo port install grace xorg-server otherports [Me, sitting at terminal hitting "return" for each set of dependencies to be installed] … message about xorg-libXt needing +flat_namespace [Me, grumbling about why I need to remember to choose variants for a dependency I didn't explicitly request] % sudo port install xorg-libXt +flat_namespace % sudo port install grace xorg-server otherports Everything works. Weeks later, when I upgraded the desktop to Sierra, with -N: % sudo port install -N grace xorg-server otherports [Me, going off for coffee and letting ports handle all the work] … no visible message about xorg-libXt … no error messages, everything appears to install correctly X11 doesn't work. % sudo port install xorg-libXt +flat_namespace X11 still doesn't work. Etc. I may be misremembering some crucial step, but I don't think so. I don't mean to be argumentative, and I am very grateful for your assistance, but I do want to understand what went wrong so that I can avoid it in the future. Thanks, Steve
