used X11 on anything else in-between or since.
Not entirely; I usually move windows between spaces by grabbing the
titlebar and then using the keyboard shortcut to move to the desired
desktop. That doesn't work with X11 windows (but maybe because I don't
use quartz-wm).

The grab and change space trick works fine with Quartz-wm. I use X11
mainly for xterms, and they just work as they should with Quartz-wm, so
I haven’t investigated others wms.
