I had X11 (Xquartz) working nicely, even after upgrading to High Sierra.
But then HS started crashing for no known reason. I re-installed it, and
had to disable SIP again to try to fix internal mail (another issue for
another group). Anyways, when I did that, and rebooted (and rebooted,
and re-stalled Xquartz, etc.), Xquartz wouldn't load. I could get the
Xquartz menu if I clicked on the icon in the dock, but couldn't even load
an xterm.

I ultimately ended up starting Xquartz in a terminal window, and then
started twm, as Xquartz's quartz-wm refused to work, too. But, unlike
real Xquartz, where I can have X11 apps in any desktop, I'm now limited
to one, and an only partially functional twm (no drop-down menus from the
desktop). Oh, and to even be able to do that, I have to have Xquartz's
Full Screen Mode turned off (when on, all xterms go away, and if I manage
to open one, it's without its title bar, etc., so there's no moving it
around, etc.

Has anyone got any idea what's going on here? If there's anything else I
need to check that I haven't, just let me know. I'm far from being an
expert on Xquartz issues. I can run it with twm and the really strange
startup procedure, but I would really prefer to have it working properly.

Suggestions, anyone?

Thanks,
