Hi Mike, I was using the version form the ubuntu repository (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:x2go/stable) which didn't work with x2goclient-3.0.1.18

The next x2goclient version will ship with vcxsrv (can be downloaded from SourceForge). The x2goclient-3.0.1.18 (current version) allows you to configure the Xserver to run with x2goclient. Install VcXsrv manually and select its usage in the client settings of x2goclient.
