Do you know what's going on under the hood here or is this just the
results of your own black-box testing?

Six of one, half a dozen of the other, isn't it? It takes more
bandwidth to send more bits. (Anyway, in my OP I meant to write
"2^bits_per_pixel", which seems reasonable given that the numbers range
from 8 to 16M.)
