Well, I think I need to clarify something here: a) connecting with "Custom Desktop" will start a NEW session. b) connecting with "local desktop" will _connect_ to the running X-Server (usually :0) which is slower due to the way it works. According to your description it works with type b) but not with a). I think in a session a) type you need to the environment to enable access the type b) session running in parallel.
