Somehow we're running out of memory, (12 = ENOMEM on our system).

I'm assuming you mean XalanStdOutputStreamWriteException, not
XercesStdOutputStreamWriteException. If so, then the error code 12
corresponds to the C run-time library errno value, so you'll need to
look that up in your compiler's documentation.
